About Us

The RideSafe BackSafe initiative promotes defensive road riding for effective risk assessment and encourages all bikers to improve their skills through training. It also emphasises the benefits of and reasons why protective clothing should be worn.

In 2005, Lancashire saw a significant increase in the number of motorcyclists who died or suffered serious injuries on our roads. Although safety cameras and hard-hitting advertising campaigns have there place, RideSafe BackSafe was created as a new, focussed and more sophisticated road safety initiative, just for bikers. Since its launch, the numbers of deaths and serious injuries have reduced drastically; even though the national trend during that time has seen a 5% increase each year.

RideSafe BackSafe is now acknowledged by the motorcycling industry, road safety partnerships and other agencies as being an authoritative and respected voice, dedicated to supporting bikers and saving lives.

The initiative is actively managed by the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety and supported by Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership and Merseyside Road Safety Partnership. Its activities reach and influence bikers across the North West region and, through this website, across the whole of the UK.

RideSafe BackSafe is run by bikers, for bikers. A large team of representative bodies, manufacturers, dealers, training schools, regional councils and emergency services all meet regularly to bring together creative thinking, new campaign ideas, activity schedules and information. (Go to the Associated Groups page to see who is involved).

The team frequently support regional biking events, shows and dealer open days and also organise Young Rider Days to support college and university students who are new to biking. The annual RideSafe Rendezvous is a free show for bikers that brings together a whole host of experts from the biking community. The addition of a spectacular stunt show and live music make for an informative and fun day out.

We know bikers are not always to blame for the road traffic collisions that they are involved in. That is why we also focus our energies on campaigns and press stories that reach all other road users. During 2008, we have supported KillSpills, the national THINK! Bike campaigns and the BMF Report-a-Road scheme, to name just three.

But the best thing that any biker can do - as a vulnerable road user – is to self improve for self-preservation. Competence and confidence will make you a safer rider and this can turn a journey into an enjoyable ride; that is why you own a bike.
